‘It’s meant to be slightly linear and slightly twisted and confusing, which is the way that love is,’ she says during ‘MTV First: Lady Gaga.’

Lady Gaga fans were treated with a very special gift Thursday (August 18), when the Lady herself graced MTV’s former “TRL” headquarters for the television premiere of her “Yoü and I” video, followed by a live, lengthy and revealing Q&A with MTV News’ Sway Calloway and a roomful of her most dedicated Little Monsters.
Speaking about the video, Gaga touched on several of the complex and layered metaphors in the clip, such as her various personas (male, female and non-human), wearing her mother’s wedding dress, the symbolism for some of her more intense life experiences, as well as the inspiration for the song.
“I wrote the song about this guy that I used to date,” she revealed, which drew surprised reactions from the fans in attendance, many of whom have assumed that Gaga was still involved with bartender beau Luc Carl. “But the song is about going back to anyone or anything in your life that means something to you. Nebraska [the video's location] is the center of it all,” she said. “For me, it was all about capturing the true spirit of song, which is when you’re in love, you’ll be willing to walk and do the craziest and most inconvenient things you can possibly imagine. The video is quite complex in the way that the story is told, and it’s meant to be slightly linear and slightly twisted and confusing, which is the way that love is.”
Lady Gaga makes her big VMA announcement: She’s opening the show!
Two of those twisted elements are Gaga’s performances as a mermaid and male alter ego Jo Calderone. One fan cheekily asked, “How do you have sex with a mermaid?”
“Well, that’s actually part of what the metaphor is — you can’t,” Gaga answered with a slight smile. “Sometimes in love, you can’t make it work. No matter what you do, there’s this giant boundary between you and someone else. So that’s what it’s about, perceiving in your imagination that there’s something magical inside of you that you can make it work.”
Speaking of Calderone, the Lady described the man as a bad boy who is not to be trusted. “He’s really hot. It’s so weird, because I’m usually really funny about men, but he does something to me,” she said, speaking of her alter ego as a personal acquaintance. “He took me out this one time when we first met, and he’s really fresh. I was really happy he wanted to be in the video and to model. He’s really fresh, though. He’s a bad boy, you know.”
Two other fan questions led to lengthy and fascinating reveals from Gaga. One asked if the wedding dress she wears in the clip is actually her mother’s.
“Yeah, that’s my mom’s dress. It’s so funny, because when I was younger, I hated my mother’s wedding dress,” Gaga admitted. “I would always say, ‘Mom, why don’t you have a long train and a tiara? I don’t understand.’ … I remember I was about 13 or 14 when I fell in love with my mother’s wedding dress. I asked her if I could use it in the video, because the love my mother and father have shared for almost 30 years now is what I hope to have someday.”
Finally, when asked to explain the significance of the ice-cream truck in the beginning of the video, Gaga revealed that it is about very specific and painful childhood memories.
“I’ve talked about some of it before with all of you: I had a lot of really intense experiences when I was younger, some of which I have shared with you and some of which I haven’t. The ice-cream truck represents all of the destruction of my youth at a very young time in my life,” she explained. “So while walking down the road to find love, the memories of the destruction of my youth sort of get in the way. That’s how I wanted to open the video, because I think it really sets up the rest of the story. It allows you to imagine you yourself are not just one person; you’re so many. That person has so many stories and memories to draw from, and they all affect your journey profusely. I’m battered quite brutally at the beginning of the video, but at the end, I’m not battered; I’m a bit strange. It’s not meant t to be an answer video; it’s meant to be a profuse number of the question.”
And that’s just the beginning of what Gaga revealed during her lengthy chat with Sway. Check back with MTV.com for more about the video, her VMA performance plans and more.

For Bruno Mars‘ deeply personal breakup track “Grenade,” the pop crooner hooked up with a man who truly understands dark images: Australian music video director Nabil Elderkin, who has cooked up clips for the likes of Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Diddy and will.i.am. The duo created a clip that mirrors the heartache of the song, where Mars sings about loving someone who won’t love him back.
The video dropped in November and has racked up hundreds of millions of views online. It’s also up for three Moonmen at Sunday’s 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Male Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year.
For those who have yet to check out the video, Mars pines over a lovely young lady. To prove his love for her, he puts on his Sunday best and drags his piano across Los Angeles, meeting up with unsavory characters along the way. When he does finally get to his beloved’s house, he sees that she is hooking up with another fellow. Heartbroken, he drags his piano away from the home, up one very difficult hill and ends up at a railroad track. Does a completely devastated Mars get hit by the train? Well, that’s the video’s great, deep, dark mystery.
“It was my concept,” the singer told MTV News earlier this month. “I said, ‘I want to drag a piano.’ I got my friend Nabil to come direct it, and it was a risk because I still hear jokes to this day like, ‘What the hell you doing dragging a piano?’ ” he said. “But it’s my art, so shut up!”
Mars, who hit the stage with B.o.B at the 2010 VMAs, is pretty stoked about having the video make the final cut as one of the nominees for Video of the Year.
“I grew up watching VMAs. I know every performance,” Mars said. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching MTV VMAs, and when we got the phone call saying that my video was up for Video of the Year, that’s the big-boy award.”
Mars is also up for a Best Choreography VMA for his much-more-fun “The Lazy Song” clip. He’s also set to take the stage as one of Sunday night’s performers.
The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year’s highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Director tells MTV News about film’s use of ‘Aroma-Scope’ technology.

Director Robert Rodriguez has made a career out of pushing the filmmaking envelope in various ways, from “Desperado” to “From Dusk Till Dawn” to his very successful “Spy Kids” franchise, which includes the first resurgent 3-D film, 2003′s “Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.”
To mark the release of the fourth “Spy Kids” film, Rodriguez has added another level to the 3-D canon with “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D.” And what exactly makes a film 4-D? A little extra sensory overload provided by what Rodriguez calls an “Aroma-Scope.”
“Instead of just going 3-D like we did on the last one, we brought in 4-D, which is a very fun gimmick that I found in this old movie in the ’80s,” Rodriguez told MTV News of being inspired by John Waters’ use of Smell-O-Vision for 1981′s “Polyester.” “It’s kind of a scratch-and-sniff [experience] and you get to be really, almost like a video game, interactive with the movie. There are some really surprising smells, and some of the biggest laughs come from that.”
Rodriguez went on to say that the Aroma-Scope, which is a card with eight numbers on it that audience members are given with their 3-D glasses, provides viewers with a less passive and more interactive film-going experience.
“Even my own kids, people today are so interactive with gaming that to go and watch the movie feels so passive, so this really bridges the gap between the two,” he explained. “You’re watching the movie and then almost like video game numbers come up and you [scratch] the cards and smell almost exactly what the characters are smelling. It’s funny, the characters are all reacting to it, the adults are reacting to it — it’s really fun.”

We recap all the sneak peeks and news to come out of the Mouse House’s movie convention.

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth

“The Avengers” might not be assembling in theaters until May 4, 2012, but fans who attended Disney’s D23 convention in Anaheim, California, over the weekend were lucky enough to catch the cast joining forces in person. MTV News was on the scene too, so stay tuned for our interviews with the stars. In the meantime, here’s a little recap of the weekend’s highlights:
Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston and Cobie Smulders all showed up to unveil two new clips from the upcoming superhero flick. It was the first time the group has come together publicly since 2010′s San Diego Comic-Con, and the first time “How I Met Your Mother” star Smulders has been part of the promotion for the movie.
Both of the clips shown focused on the showdown between the Avengers and “Thor” bad boy Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, AceShowBiz reports. The first showed Loki trapped in a high-tech chamber in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Helicarrier, chatting with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. It is revealed that the chamber was actually created to hold the Hulk, but will hold Loki because he threatens Earth with war and “a force [he] can’t control.”
The second scene featured Downey’s Tony Stark chatting with Loki in a private bar. “Let’s do a head count,” Loki says. “Two world class assassins” — the camera cuts to shots of Hawkeye and Black Widow — “a demigod” — cut to Thor — “a living legend who actually lives up to the legend” — a glimpse of Captain America. Stark responds by saying, “And you, big fella, you have managed to piss off every single one of them.”
“I have an army,” Loki says. Stark strikes back, “We have a Hulk.”
When MTV caught up with Downey and Hemsworth after the panel, the two were coy about any scenes other than the ones that have been revealed. Downey joked that his favorite scene in the movie was the one “in which we don’t reveal anything about the plot,” but Hemsworth admitted that his favorite was already revealed.
“One of our first days was the whole assembly,” he said, referring to the scene that was revealed at the end of “Captain America: The First Avenger.” “That was pretty crazy. Not only meeting Robert Downey and Scarlett and whatever, but it was meeting Iron Man and Black Widow and the Hulk. It’s exciting.”
Marvel wasn’t the only Disney division doing some heavy lifting at D23, though. Pixar showed up with a slew of announcements, including some news about unannounced upcoming films, ScreenRant recapped.
First on the docket is “Brave,” the Scotland-based animated adventure that hits in 2012. In addition to showing some new clips of the movie, Pixar also released a fleshed out plot synopsis that gives “Brave” more context. “Monsters University” received a summer 2013 release date slot, and Pixar also added two yet-untitled animated flicks to its upcoming releases. The first, directed by “Up” helmer Bob Peterson, speculates on what would happen if dinosaurs never became extinct and should hit theaters in fall 2013. The second, directed by “Monsters, Inc.” ‘s Pete Doctor, explores inside the human mind and should be released at some point in 2014.
Also on the animation front, Shock Till You Drop reported on the “Frankenweenie” sizzle reel that was presented at the panel, which included footage from the flick, behind-the-scenes moments and interviews with the cast members. The title card for the movie was also unveiled, as well as the news that Danny Elfman will be composing the flick’s score. “Frankenweenie” hits theaters October 5, 2012.
Jason Segel showed up with his “The Muppets” co-stars Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy to present two new clips from the movie, Entertainment Weekly reported. Clip number one featured an inside look at Kermit’s house and showed that he’s stuck in his ’80s heyday, while clip number two showed off Muppets Rolf, Kermit, Fozzie Bear and Dr. Teeth trying to get the old Muppet Theater back in working order.
Not to be outdone, the cast and crew of “John Carter of Mars” presented four new clips from their upcoming sci-fi flick. Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe and Lynn Collins stood with director Andrew Stanton to show off the footage, EW recounted. The unfinished clips featured scenes where the titular Carter first lands on Mars, gets captured by Thark leader Tars Tarkas, has to battle his way out of a gladiatorial arena and tries to convince his lady love not to go through with her arranged marriage. Vulture said the clips had “a distinctly Pixar sense of humor,” which can be attributed to Stanton’s history with the animation company.
The last big presentation of D23 was for “Oz, the Great and Powerful,” and though there was no finished footage, the panel did get to see James Franco’s wizard and Michelle Williams’ Glinda in costume. AceShowBiz said that a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel, narrated by director Sam Raimi, displayed concept art for the Emerald City, munchkins and the yellow brick road. The movie is currently in production in Detroit and is set to hit theaters on March 8, 2013.

People magazine reports Bieber made $53 million last year, followed by Miley Cyrus, Taylor Lautner and others.

Justin Bieber had a very good year. Seriously, like a major one that rivals most corporate CEOs’. According to a People magazine ranking of the top-earning teen actors and musicians, Bieber, 17, raked in $53 million in 2010.
Most of that cash came from his smash movie, “Never Say Never,” and his hit fragrance, “Someday.” (By contrast, girlfriend Selena Gomez made $5.5 million.) Bieber reached that big-baller level thanks to the record-breaking returns from “Never,” which is the most successful concert-themed film in U.S. history, with more than $73 million earned to date.
Nipping at his heels was veteran teen starlet Miley Cyrus, whose haul was $48 million, almost all of it earned from touring.
Other big earners on the list include “Twilight” top wolf Taylor Lautner, who earned $8.5 million for the final two installments of the movie series, as well as $7.5 million for his upcoming starring debut in the action thriller “Abduction.”
Nick Jonas had a very good year as well, with totals around $12.5 million, while “Two and a Half Men” star Angus T. Jones banked $7.8 million, thanks to a $300,000 per episode payday.
Jaden and Willow Smith made the list, with Jaden earning $5 million last year, $3 million of it from his starring role in “The Karate Kid,” while sister Willow’s music career rang up $4 million.
Acting sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning also did pretty well, with Dakota, 17, getting $4 million for “Breaking Dawn” and Elle, 13, taking home $1.5 million for “Super 8.”

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, ‘Never Say Never’ star said in 2009.

Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.
In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.
“My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I’d never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people,” he recalled.
“And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, ‘Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?’ The politest possible way he could say no, he did. … I took the hint. I didn’t get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session.”
But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. “He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, ‘I should have let this kid sing,’ and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me.”
As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.
“As far as Usher being my mentor, he’s definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important,” he explained.
“There’s a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life.”
On Friday, Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary, “Never Say Never,” opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.

An a cappella girl group covers Usher’s hit for Nationals in next week’s episode.
By Aly Semigran

During this week’s episode of “Glee”, the gang from New Directions took a big risk when they decided they would compete in Nationals by singing their own original songs. Well, the stakes just got a little higher.
MTV News has an exclusive first listen to one of the rival groups who will go up against the McKinley High glee club in New York City during next Tuesday’s (May 24) big season two finale. In the upcoming episode, an all-female a cappella group sings Usher‘s 2004 club and radio smash “Yeah!,” which may have the Nationals judges saying just that.
Singers replace synthesizers for the four-note melody that repeats throughout the song, and lead vocalists RaVaughn Brown and Missi Hale match the high energy that Usher, Lil Jon and Ludacris brought to the track.
Granted, a few things have been tweaked in the version for the tween-friendly show, including the length (the original is over four minutes long, while the “Glee” version comes in at three and a half minutes) and the tune’s instructions to “Take that and rewind it back … got the rhythm make ya booty go.”
Also, instead of Ludacris’ verse, “We want a lady in the street/ And a freak in the bed,” one girl sings, “You know you want a kiss on the lips, old red.” The line, “Ludacris fill cups like double D’s” has also been cut from the song.
But, it’s not all PG. At one point in the girls’ rendition of the track, they page homage to Lil Jon’s crunk hit “Get Low,” singing, “From the windows to the walls” and even Mystikal’s booty-happy single “Shake Ya Ass,” when they urge, “Show me whatcha’ workin’ with.”
At the 2005 Grammy Awards, the power trio of Usher, Lil Jon and Ludacris won the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Yeah!” But, will the song bring the same sort of fortune to this girl group at Nationals? Or will the glory all belong to New Directions this time? Gleeks will still have to wait a few more days to find out.
The “Glee” season finale airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Fox, while “Glee”: The Music, Volume 6, including the three new original songs “Light Up the World,” “Pretending” and “As Long as You’re There,” will be available on Monday.
What do you think of this a cappella group’s version of “Yeah!”? Let us know in the comments section below!
